Which feels a tad strange since it feels like the definitive version is lacking behind the original in this mode.
It's the 100% recommendation always. That said, if you like the New World discovery & conquest theme and the colonial setting, AoE III Definitive is also a really great game. But AoE II Definitive is an absolute must always.

Age of Empires III: Definitive Edition. Where to begin, this game is trash compared to age of empires 2, it was trash in 2005 and is trash today. Play aoe 2 or even aoe 2 or EVEN AOM instead. You can't see other players deck in a room like the old game and then you waste 1 hour with players that have supremacy deck on treaty.
