You don't need a pricey AMP. If the DAC on your MB is fine (no static noise etc), you can spend 20-30USD and get a decent amp from Fosi or Aiyima. I wouldn't suggest cutting from Headphone budget. Yeah, you could also get something like the ibasso dc05 or shanling ua1 pro for the dt 770 80 ohm. get the 80 ohm one.
I have Beyerdynamic DT1990 Pro, 250 Ohm which are Super‐cali‐fragil‐istic‐expi‐ali‐docious. Surround = 67. Crystalizer = 30. Graphic Equalizer = Flat, or whatever sounds good to you. Spankie_Flanker. OP • 3 yr. ago. just tried crystalizer and it was giving me weird static pops. pongpaktecha. • 3 yr. ago.

SONY WH1000-XM3: + they have juicier bass. + they are not felt on the head and the fit is more comfortable. + has noise cancellation. + wireless + wired. - Bluetooth sound quality is ~30% behind Beyerdynamic DT 770 PRO (32 Ohm) - a lot of details are missed. - the sound quality on the wire was very disappointing. Measured on the HeadAcoustics HMS (average of 5 re-seats for each headphone) through Schiit Ragnarok and RME UFX. Very little difference between the two, and the DT 1990 is even more sibilant than the DT 990. But it has less harmonic distortion as can be seen below.

The 990's are more peaky, but the 880's have a severe lack of bass compared to the 990's for me, which ultimately makes the treble dominant when listening to them. Further, I find the 990's to sound a bit more open. You will get varying recommendations because people have varying experiences and recommendations.
The dt 990 was a poor choice imo. For the price bracket it gets outperformed but the hd 560S or the dt880 600 ohm, although you need a better amp then the fiio k5 pro to drive those, which will cost extra, youd need something like an adam to drive them well.
The Astro A40 TR Headset + MixAmp Pro 2019 are better for most uses than the Beyerdynamic DT 990 PRO. The Astro are more comfortable and have companion software that offers sound customization features, though some users have reported issues using it. They also have a mic with a great performance and a better passive soundstage. On the other hand, the Beyerdynamic have a somewhat more neutral Dt880 has a totally different sound than the 770 or the 231; much more revealing on the high end and deeper, yet less impactful bass. Rest assured, the 880 has a very large soundstage; it slaughters the senn 595 in this respect. Haven't heard the 990, came real close to getting it though!! Massdrop products often offer better value for money. Eg HD6xx costs $220 but the identical product HD650 is ~$360. HD58x naming is misleading. In reality, it is one tier above hd599. Its within same class as HD600, HD650, HD660 but with different tuning. .
