For 2016 Transporter Van T6 Volkswagen recommends to use: VW 507 00, VW 505 01, VW 502 00, and VW 504 00 engine oils. To select the right engine oil see the table below. How much engine oil you need to put into 2016 Transporter Van depends on the engine installed, and some other conditions listed below.

Replace the oil filter every time when changing motor oil. Wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquid. Unfortunately, like many vehicles from the VW range, the Transporter BiTDi has been plagued with a serious issue that could result in total engine failure. Initially, this issue appears as high oil usage, whilst this can be common in some of the VAG engines (namely my 2015 Skoda Octavia TDi VRS) this is much more serious than you’d expect.
Press and hold down the [o.o/SET] button in the instrument cluster. . Restart the ignition. . Release the [o.o/set] button. Confirm the selection on the instrument cluster by pressing the [OK/RESET] button on the wiper lever or the [OK] button on the multifunction steering wheel.
Re engine software on T6 and T6.1 - yes, they run different software. Among others, "processing" of oil level sensor data seems to be more refined on T6.1. Below a snapshot of what T6.1 engine software reports re engine oil level. On T6 only two first parameters seem to be alive.

Just to close off this thread the oil capacity of my T6.1 (DNA engine code) I think is 7 litres, which brings the oil level half way up the cross hatched mark on the dip stick with the engine up to operating temp. (Which was at the same level when supplied new from the factory). But 7.25 litres brings the level almost to the top
